What are you anyway?

I was at Utah Sate in the Kent Concert Building when a guy from my orchestra came up to me and said, "If you don't mind me asking, what are you anyway?" I would have been offended and very confused if I had not been in situations like this at least all the time my entire life. Sometimes it's kinda fun to watch people ask me awkwardly and stumble for the right way to ask me what I'm made of, but most of the time I usually let them off the hook quickly and just tell them.

I sometimes tend to forget that I don't always blend in with the crowd. Lately I have noticed a trend that whenever I go somewhere someone will just start up a conversation with me in Spanish. I noticed that all the people from the Spanish branch say "Hola" to me. I assumed they said that to everyone, but I asked the other people that I work with in Nursery and they said that the members of the Spanish branch usually just say "hello" or nothing at all. I notice it in other places too. It first started with just an "hola" here and there (usually in walmart) but the other day I was in the mall and a guy looked at me and said "hola, como estas?" I thought that it was a little random then I went out to buy some girl scout cookies and there were two girls and one decided to help me in Spanish. Then a few weeks later at Kroger a man came up to me and asked me if I needed any help, in Spanish. Oh and I can't forget the time I went to take Jackson to the doctor, and when the doctor came into our room she looked and me and said very slowly, "DO YOU SPEAK ENGLISH?"

I've been Hawaiian quite a bit. Polynesian too. One time someone asked me if I was Greek. I've also been Philippino and Chinese. Oh and someone got me confused with one of Jared's ex-girlfriends who was American Indian. I think I've pretty much been everything but Japanese/Caucasian. I'm working on that one.

Divertido, debido a su acento y habilidad divertidos con una lanza, pensé siempre que usted era un aborigen de Australia.

I can add middle-eastern to that list. I love it when a hispanic guy will just start rambling to me in Spanish (when I say love I actually mean it drives me nuts). It's even funnier when people ask me if Caleb is adopted. It's a good thing we don't offend easily.

You could always make up some pretty crazy stories like you are from the middle-east and you escaped and fought off Osama Bin Laden and that is the REAL reason why he is in hiding!

John was asked once in a park in Dallas by a drunk guy, when John was with Caroline, "Hey, she's Chinese, but she's white. What are you?" I think you should do as Tiffany said and just make stuff up. But do it in Spanish.

I know it's seems silly that I'm Mexican and I didn't understand a word Brian said. So, anyone willing to translate. I think it said something about diversity in Australia? Am I close?

Sorry. I thought you'd understand. Translation: "Funny, because of your weird accent and skills with a spear, I always thought you were aboriginal Australian."

One of my good friends here is Cuban. Her mother thinks John is gorgeous. She always tells me how good looking he is when she visits my friend. John always acts like she is being silly but I think he secretly likes it.

Hola Sara,
I guess it's too late for you to switch to the Spanish branch. I had a good laugh over this. We should get together to play games again. Know any Mexican ones?

That's hilarious! Especially that part about your pediatrician! I had no idea that kind of thing happened to you. I totally think you deserve to have some fun with it from time to time.

ok here is a funny story that just happened the other day. When I first met my physical therapist, he was asking me a bunch of medical questions, and I jokingly said, "I don't know, I don't speak that language" meaning I didn't understand the medical terms. He thought I meant I don't speak English. He was trying to be nice and said that it was ok because he also has a hard time learning other languages. DUH!

Sara -- I am still laughing! I still have to chuckle about the time the waiter at Olive Garden thought Jackson was my son, not yours. I must admit though -- it is a little strange for you and Jared to have such blonde haired boys. So, even though no one knows what you are, at least you make cute kids!! Adios!!

sheesh, that's crazy. i myself am whiter than wonderbread but because of my dark hair and eyes(i guess) several times i've been asked if i'm hispanic or something else. i wish!
